Hyena:
The spotted hyena, Crocuta crocuta, is a powerful killer. An average weight is between 40 and 65 kilograms (88 to 143 lbs), with the female being 5 to 10 kilos (11 to 22 lbs) heavier than the male. They stand almost a metre at the shoulders and have a bite force almost twice that of a lion. Hyenas can run at a speed of 60 km/hr (36 mph).
An alpha female leads the pack, and they can take down large animals such as wildebeest, zebra and antelope. They’ve been known to attack cape buffalo, giraffe, humans and young elephants. Unlike other hyenas, the spotted hyena is more of a predator and less of a scavenger. In numbers, they can drive lions off a kill, particularly at night when they are bolder.
